The outcome was a split decision: the three men judges found for Monis and Droudis, and the three women judges against. We argue that this decision was significant because it draws attention to the law’s key role in framing political understandings of the nature of and demarcation between public and private spheres. The Court’s interpretations concerning how we should understand and apply the foundational relationships binding the state, the individual, and the public and private spheres in the twenty-first century highlights the gendered complexities of the politics shaping those relationships. It also highlights the gendered privileging of what sort of speech should be exempted from the law’s immediate purview, and in so doing, further reveals the masculinism upon which Australia’s constitutional framework rests.]]> Wed 04 Sep 2019 10:06:12 AEST ]]> Reoccupying the political: transforming political science https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31046 Wed 04 Sep 2019 09:55:41 AEST ]]> Public participation and environmental governance in Singapore https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31418 Wed 04 Sep 2019 09:55:19 AEST ]]> Feminist political theory without apology: Anna Doyle Wheeler, William Thompson, and the appeal of one half the human race, women https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46726 Tue 29 Nov 2022 11:46:58 AEDT ]]> National resource ownership and community engagement in Tanzania's natural gas governance https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46725 Tue 29 Nov 2022 11:35:04 AEDT ]]> Re-imagining the Global Colour Line: The Bolt Case and the Politics of Whiteness https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46682 Tue 29 Nov 2022 09:36:04 AEDT ]]> The Role of Traditional Authorities in the Promotion of Electoral Justice and Peacebuilding in Ghana https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:53450 Tue 28 Nov 2023 09:56:16 AEDT ]]> “Manning Up” with Pauline Hanson: playing the gender card, again https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:47400 Tue 28 Feb 2023 15:44:03 AEDT ]]> Troubling Elites: Gender and Paradoxes of Political Ignorance https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:43906 Tue 04 Oct 2022 14:48:29 AEDT ]]> 'A brutal blow against the democratic normality': unlearning the epistemology of the political https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31047 Blindness and Seeing. Both novels tackle directly a central, if not the central, signature metaphor of Western political thought, namely that of ‘seeing the light’. This metaphor takes many forms and recurs throughout the tradition of Western political philosophy as a source, legitimiser, and validator of knowing, and perhaps even a guarantor of knowledge. In particular, this metaphor has served to make knowable whatever it is that is signified by ‘the political’. By extension, it also means that whatever might be outside of this epistemological frame is rendered unknowable, if not unthinkable. Both of Saramago’s novels provide a fruitful means to recalibrate how we might know ‘the political’. The novels call into question the epistemic signatures that frame our commonly accepted understandings of ‘the political’ and in so doing provoke us further to question how we might move towards unlearning the epistemology of the political.]]> Tue 03 Sep 2019 18:22:05 AEST ]]> Adjudicating electoral disputes or judicialising politics?
